Common Black Ant

The most common ant in the UK is the Common Black Ant (Garden Ant ). Generally these ants are found outdoors but can find their way indoors whilst foraging for food and then becoming a nuisance . During late summer winged males and larger females (queens) emerge in large numbers or “swarms” for a short period of time to mate. Once mated the male ants will soon die and a small proportion of  the mated females will survive to form new colony’s (nests)

Pharaohs Ant

The Pharaohs Ant is a non native tropical species and found only in heated buildings In the UK. This ant is in particularly associated with hospitals, prisons and large urban housing blocks. Unlike the Common Black Ant colony’s, Pharaohs Ant colony’s contain numerous queens (all of which lay eggs). Infestations spread by groups of workers and queens leaving the main nest to form satellite colonies.
